What is Neutral oil?

Neutral oil is a culinary term seen frequently in cookbooks or online recipe sites.  It simply means any oil that does not add any residual flavor to the recipe.

Examples of neutral oils include:

  • Grapeseed Oil
  • Corn oil
  • Canola Oil
  • Vegetable Oil  Labeled "generically" as vegetable oil for example, a common brand in the U.S. is Wesson Oil.  These oils are typically made from a combination of vegetables as opposed canola oil which is made from one specific plant.

Neutral Oil Substitute

These oils can be used in baking or cooking without adding any flavor to the food.  If you need a neutral oil and you don't have any of the above then you can reach for:

  • Peanut oil if you have it.  It will work in a pinch.
  • OR - A light olive oil which may still have some residual flavor but much less than EVOO

If you need substitutes for other oils just look in this dictionary by oil name.
